Serengeti National Park is well-known for its healthy stock of other resident wildlife particularly the “big five” which is named as such for being the five most prized trophies taken by hunters. The Serengeti is believed to hold the largest population of lions in Africa due in part to the abundance of prey species. In fact, more than 3,000 lions live in this ecosystem. The reclusive African leopards are also commonly seen in the Seronera region but are present throughout the national park with the population at around 1,000.

Day 2

Travel/activity: After breakfast at the Lodge, proceed to a full day of game drive at Serengeti North to view the great migration.

In Serengeti National Park, resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in the Wagakuria area. It harbors prides of lion up to 30 strong. However, from August to October the area turns into a wildlife paradise. The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. Please take note that to actually catch the river crossing is very difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck.

Day 3

Travel/activity: After breakfast at the Lodge, proceed to a full day of game drive at Serengeti North to view the great migration.

The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. A herd can be seen next to river and only decide to cross or not cross until a couple of days later. This area is a stunning region with kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation and open plains, similar to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Kogatende

Day 4

Travel/activity:You’ll depart after an early breakfast for Central Seronera.

River crossings at Kogatende start to occur every day in August as the mega herd settles into the area. For August, September and October, game viewing up here is superb with river crossings pretty much guaranteed every day. There is no distinct movement as the herds tend to cross back and forth over the river, following the rains and subsequent fresh grasses. It is not uncommon to see different herds crossing in different directions on the same day.

There will be a display of a million wildebeests — each of them driven by the same ancient rhythm, fulfilling its instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life: a frenzied three-week bout of territorial conquests and mating; survival of the fittest as 40km (25 mile) long columns plunge through crocodile-infested waters on the annual exodus north; replenishing the species in a brief population explosion that produces more than 8,000 calves daily before the 1,000 km (600 mile) pilgrimage begins again.
